LightPlay is a colorful architectural glass sculpture by the artist team Mags Harries & Lajos Héder designed to interact with the shifting sunlight and enhance the architectural features of the South Star Lofts on the Avenue of the Arts.
Commissioned through the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority’s Percent for Art Program, the artwork features vertical panels that ascend the building, mirroring the rhythm of the windows, and a canopy below that shelters the subway entrance.
As sunlight filters through the tempered glass panels embedded with dichroic film, vivid colors are cast across the building’s facade and surrounding sidewalks, changing depending on the time of day, weather, season, and viewer’s perspective. In the evening, LED lights project onto the building, continuing the ever-changing choreography of light and color.
