Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s OPEN AIR (2012) was selected as one of five Merit Award Winners for the 2015 CODAawards “Public Spaces” category presented by CODAworx. Commissioned by the Association for Public Art, OPEN AIR was a spectacular interactive light installation that combined mobile technology and participants’ voices to activate 24 robotic searchlights along Philadelphia’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway in fall 2012. The CODAaward jurors applauded the goals of OPEN AIR and the “successful integration of the artwork into the space.” They also noted how the project is an “outstanding example of artistic collaboration.”
