Join the Association for Public Art (aPA) for a free virtual lunchtime tour in East Fairmount Park on Friday, October 9th. We’ll be sharing fascinating stories behind select public artworks near Kelly Drive and Fountain Green Drive, including Playing Angels, Sleeping Woman, and the Orestes and Pylades Fountain.
This tour is part of Fairmount Park Conservancy’s OcTOURber series of self-guided tours in Fairmount Park with five themes: Historic Houses, Public Art, Nature, Water and Past & Present. For more Fairmount Park Conservancy events, visit myphillypark.org.
Three slim angels concentrate raptly on their music as they hover above the grass along Kelly Drive. The work of Swedish-born artist Carl Milles, they are casts from a group of originals from the Millesgården in Stockholm, Sweden.

Poet Stephen Berg and visual artist Tom Chimes describe Sleeping Woman as a “choral voice rising out of the site.” The collaborative work was created specifically for its location along the Schuylkill River.

Kelly and Fountain Green Drives
Just four days after the death of General Grant in 1885, the Fairmount Park Art Association (now the Association for Public Art) formed a committee to create a fund for erecting an appropriate memorial.
Along Kelly Drive between Fountain Green Drive and the Connecting Railway and Girard Avenue Bridges
The Association for Public Art, working with New York’s Madison Square Park Conservancy in a first-time collaboration, brought internationally acclaimed artist Martin Puryear’s Big Bling to Philadelphia as a temporary installation on Kelly Drive.
